Spinal Care Tips

  • When lifting or bending always keep the back straight and bend at the knees.  A good rule of thumb is never bend at the waist without bending the knees.
  • When sitting for long periods at the computer keep your back straight and your head up.  Adjust the computer screen and or chair height so your eyes are level with the center of the screen.  Get up and move around every 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Do some sort of cardiovascular exercise (walking, biking, swimming, jogging etc.) at least 4 times a week.  Research has shown this to be an excellent way of improving your spinal health as well as your general health.
  • Keep yourself well hydrated.  The spinal discs loose water during the day and absorb water at night.  Eat food high in anti-oxidants, this should include lots of raw fruits and vegetables.
  • If you experience an acute back or neck strain, apply ice packs for 15 or 20 minutes every three hours.
  • Get regular chiropractic check ups.  Maintaining the alignment and function of your spine can prevent back and neck pain and improve the quality of your life.
